Education & Skills Development

From classrooms to careers — futures the children write themselves.

School re-entry, scholarships, vocational training and mentorship — so that recovery turns into a livelihood, not a return to the street.

Why this matters

The need we're responding to.

Once a child is safe, the next biggest determinant of whether they stay safe is whether they have a future. Education is the spine of that future — and most children we meet have missed years of it. Some can't read at the level expected of children half their age.

So we don't put children straight back into a classroom and hope. We design an education pathway with them: catch-up tutoring, school fees and uniforms where re-entry makes sense, technical and vocational training where it doesn't, and mentorship through every step.

What we do

The work, in four parts.

  • School re-entry & support

Catch-up tutoring, school fees, uniforms, books, transport, KCPE/KCSE registration and on-going liaison with teachers.

  • Scholarships

Secondary, technical college and university scholarships funded by partners — based on need and earned through consistent effort.

  • Vocational & technical training

Tailoring, mechanics, hospitality, beauty, agriculture and digital skills — with employer placements where possible.

  • Mentorship & life skills

Weekly mentor sessions with Wema graduates and Mombasa professionals; sessions on money, communication and consent.

How we work

Principles we hold.

  • Pathway, not punishment

Children who fall behind aren't set back — they're met where they are. The point is competence, not compliance.

  • Graduates teach

More than half our weekly mentors are Wema graduates. The children we serve become the adults who serve next.

  • Employer-shaped curriculum

Our vocational courses are co-designed with the businesses that hire from them — so what we teach is what Mombasa is actually hiring for.
